I have been labeled “The Gentle Mohel” as a reflection of the considerable effort I devote to minimizing pain to the child. Pain reduction is of utmost concern to me while performing a Brit.
Unfortunately, many circumcisions are done without enough emphasis placed on pain minimization to the child. This is evident to anyone who has been witness to the 15-30 minute ordeal a child has to endure in a hospital-setting circumcision complete with nerve block injections, the usage of heavy instruments and clamps, and the baby being tied down to a hard plastic circ-board.
Unfortunately, today even many in the mohel community use some form of clamp. These clamps significantly extend the time of the bris and cause severe discomfort to the child. (For a more detailed description of the various clamps and how they work, click here)
In stark contrast, I can typically complete the entire Brit procedure in a minute and a half or less. Yes, you read that correctly – the entire Brit procedure, from the moment the first of my carefully selected, ultra-gentle instruments come in contact with your son, until the time his diaper is back on, and more importantly, has stopped crying, is typically less than 2 minutes. (BTW that’s less cry-time then his average visit to the doctor’s office!)
I use a mogen or shield (not to be confused with the mogen clamp) which has been used for centuries, doesn’t cause pain, and is the best protection against any accidental damage to proximate tissue. A topical anesthetic can be used in addition, and has shown in studies to help moderately with pain.
There are many options available to parents who need a bris/brit or circumcision for their son. Not all methods and mohels were created equally. Choose carefully and wisely, the casual observer may not realize the difference, but your son will certainly appreciate it!
